Growing my hair

Word Count Wednesday
I’m growing my hair out.

Not my hair in general, but specific hairs: the white ones I’ve been plucking for the past three years. A friend once told me his wife was going white gracefully, so I felt guilty and vulgar every time I went for the tweezers. But back when the whites were few and far between, each one seemed wrong and out of place, like a crazy-long eyebrow hair. They had to go.

There are a lot of them now, though, so I’m letting them be.

It’s hard.

I’ll let you know when it starts to feel graceful.

Tuckered

Thankful Friday
I'm thankful, today, that Taavi loves Wind in the Willows, and that he drew such a fantastic picture of Badger in his reading journal. Heck, I'm glad he has a reading journal, and that he's in Teacher Libby's class, and that the transition to kindergarten has been so full of excitement and joy.

I'm thankful that Kai was bouncy with good cheer when I picked her up from soccer practice last night, even though her legs and cheeks were like popsicles in the wet, swirly fog blowing in off the bay.

I'm thankful that Eli was happy and proud and tired after running his first cross country meet, and that he has his first middle school team uniform: a running tank top that says COBRAS across the chest.

I'm thankful that Caiman is in such a good mood since he started his lifeguard certification course, and that he's excited to smell like chlorine again. Last night, he made dinner for the whole family, and it was good!

The kids have all been tuckered out early this week, from long days and physical exertion, but they've been happy -- barring the evenings that Taavi's so exhausted that he's on the verge of tears until his head hits the pillow. We've been reading earlier and the kids have been getting to sleep at a decent hour (okay, except for the teenager when he gets up to watch Scrubs and Family Guy after the rest of us are in bed). And so... we've been getting up a little earlier than last year and, get this: getting to school on time!

I'm thankful for that, too.
