Seven songs

I've been tagged by the Scrabulicious East Coast Bethany (who has—ouch!—499 points in our current Scrabulous game):

“List seven songs you are into right now. No matter what the genre, whether they have words, or even if they're not any good, but they must be songs you're really enjoying now, shaping your spring. Post these instructions in your blog along with your 7 songs. Then tag 7 other people to see what they're listening to.”

My tags: Jonathan, Mariko, Jamee, Pam, Hugh and/or John, Penny and Avery.

(And the rest of you, of course, who can respond right here in the comments.)

My seven songs, in no particular order:

  1. Rocky Raccoon, because it's the latest song-I-love that Hugh has been playing a lot
  2. Car Crash, by Matt Nathanson
  3. Freeway, Aimee Mann
  4. The theme from Wonderpets, because it popped into my head as Chris, the one guy in our department, was gazing out the window at the lagoon and saying, "Where's your mate, ducky? Are you okay, ducky?" and really, really meaning it.
  5. So the other morning KFOG had the Barenaked Ladies in the studio, promoting the children's CD they just released, and they played the most head-over-heels excellent version of One Week ever. It put me in an all-day peppy good mood. While I don't have that particular version to share, here's an at-home version the BNL boys made that is pretty damn charming, too:

  6. Hmmm... a few other fun-n-happy songs right now are Mercy (by Duffy) and Peace, Love & Happiness (by G Love & Special Sauce). But I'm going to have to include an FOTC song, if for no other reason than that Cyril did not know who Bret & Jemaine were when I listed them as the famous people I wanted to show up at my summer BBQ. Enjoy:

  7. And last but not least, I can't help it: I was a teenager in the '80s, and when I heard the new Journey song I nearly flipped! I am now sort of in love with Arnel Pineda, the Filipino Steve Perry sing-a-like that Neil Schon (who still ROCKS, by the way) found on YouTube!

Rock on, my friends!

1. "Fraud in the 80s" by Mates of State. Husband and wife combo with two kids. They are what I would like to be.

2. "I'm Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend How to Dance With you" by The Black Kids. Just fun, fun, fun.

3. "San Bernadino" by the Mountain Goats. The Goats will always be on any list I create about music I love.

4. "Falling Slowly" by the Frames. The very same song from "Once" that won the Oscar for best song. But this version is by the guy's band.

5. "Sequestered in Memphis" by The Hold Steady. Young Bruce Springsteen and Angus Young had a baby and they called in the Hold Steady.

6. "Chelsea Dagger" by the Fratellis. A little bit "last year" but it won't seem to come out of my CD player. Try not to have a blast.

7. "Tesla's Hotel Room" by the Handsome Family. Another husband and wife duo but with a totally different sensibility. Be haunted, learn a few things, and fall in love all at the same time.

Ok Beth, after a few days of thought, here are mine

1) Modern Nature by Sondre Lerche on the Dan in Real life Soundtrack. I just like how their voices work together.
2) Heart’s Barracuda. We just got Guitar Hero. We rock!
3) Pendulum Swinger by the Indigo Girls. Oscar and I both pretend to play it on our guitars and sing badly.
4) Talk of the Town by Jack Johnson. Sure, it’s on the Curious George Soundtrack, but it’s still a good song
5) Freddie the Freeloader by Miles Davis. Not the best ‘song’ on the album, but it’s my cellphone ringtone, and I invariably end up with it in my head as I’m working
6) Business Time by the Flight of the Conchords. Funniest thing I’ve seen in the past ~5 years
7) Blitzkrieg bop by the Ramones. Hey ho let’s go!

Beth,

I am patheticly not listening to music these days and this is a kick in the pants to get on with it as I even have a new ipod and everything. So, I quit the game and went home to work on my itunes library...meanwhile, I put Sam in the game in my place:

Hi Beth,

Pam tagged me and said I'm it. So, here's my weird list:

I Can't Keep from Crying: Blues Project
Porpoise Mouth: Country Joe
Eyes of the World: Grateful Dead
Famous Blue Raincoat: Jennifer Warnes
Free Man in Paris: Joni Mitchell
The Highwayman: Loreena McKennitt
My Little Red Book: Love

It's a bit eclectic and most of the tunes are at least 25 years old. But we just got DSL in Italy and I'm having a great time recreating the record collection which was left sitting in our barn in Petaluma, CA!

Best,
-Sam

1. "Dear Mr President", Pink. It's irreverent and clever.
2. "Girl from Ipanema", Artist unknown by me (EVERYone sings it). I find I'm humming it all the time.
3. "Conversations with My 13-year old self", Pink. My 13-year old self is reincarnated in 12-year old Mackenzie.
4. "Rehab", Winehouse. It's just so catchy.
5. "Indiana Jones" theme song. Just saw all of the movies. Sad about the newest one. And the third one, too, come to think of it. And maybe even the second one.
6. Let's go out to the ballgame" Is that the title? God Bless America, too, I guess, for the same reason....
7. "Peer Gynt, Op 23-7, Arabian Dance", Grieg. It's another one I find myself humming. Great crescendo action. I'm all about the action, as we all know!

Hi Banana!

Here are my songs, in no particular order:

1) Put Down the Ducky - The cast of Sesame Street (okay, just kidding...here's the real list)

1) Tilt - a new instrumental by my favorite punk group Conflict

2) No More Presidents - The Briefs. I love the song, and can't disagree with the sentiment.

3) New Dreams - Naked Raygun. The whole song lasts about a minute and a half, and really only has about 10 words in the whole thing: "I've got new dreams and I'm gonna make 'em real!" I love it though, it's got high energy (especially the live version), and I find the words to be inspiring.

4) The Rip - Portishead. Portishead is a band I never ever would have found or liked on my own, but Tiff loves them and I have to admit some of their songs have really grown on me. The Rip is from their new album (the first in 10 years, apparently), and it's slow and soft and I love the singer's voice. It's one of those songs that I think of as a sad song, but it doesn't make me feel sad or down. I actually have no idea what it's about. It's probably about puppies. Like the Radiohead song that I loved and was so sure that the words had to be so very deep and dark and personal, because the music was so sad and intense, and it turns out Thom York was just writing about some vacation he took somewhere. No sadness, no deep revelations. Just a vacation. So much for paying attention to lyrics.

5) I'm Shipping Up to Boston - The Dropkick Murphy's. It's punk, with bagpipes. Enough said.

6) Take a Bow - Muse. I don't know who Muse is singing about in this song, but I'd put money on it being George W ("the W stands for Who do I have to invade to get a beer around here?"). And no, it's not at all complimentary. In one line, they inform him he'll be going to hell for his sins. I don't believe in hell, but I feel like maybe they'll create one just for him.

7) When I started this I thought I wouldn't come up with 7 songs. Now I wish this was "15 songs". My final song is The Flesh Failures (Let the Sunshine In) - Movie Soundtrack from Hair. Coop says the broadway soundtrack is way better, but I disagree. And I'm right.
